The Pomeroy Sport Centre is a magnificent multi-sport facility featuring an Olympic-sized speed skating oval, two NHL-sized hockey rinks, a walking track suspended from the third floor, and a training gym. Over 140,000 sq. feet are available to host your next event. The Centennial Park Recreation Campus is centrally located to several recreational facilities, hotels, restaurants, and other amenities.

Due to warm weather in Prince George, the Canada Winter Games officials advised the City of Fort St. John that the remaining speed skating long track competitions would be moved to the Pomeroy Sport Centre speed skating oval in Fort St. John. With only 2 days notice, City staff prepared the facility for the 63 skaters, coaches, officials and their families who made the 400+ km trip via chartered airplane. 12 races over 3 days and medal ceremonies were held at the Pomeroy Sport Centre with the help of countless volunteers and City of Fort St. John staff.
Dawson Creek and Fort St. John co-hosted the World U17 Men’s Hockey Challenge from October 30 to November 7, 2015.
Three Canadian and five international teams from the United States, Russia, Finland, Sweden and the Czech Republic competed in the 2015 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge. This international event included 22 competition games and four exhibition games. In Fort St. John, the games were played at the North Peace Arena, and in Dawson Creek, they were played at the Encana Events Centre.
Over 200 volunteers from the Fort St. John Host Committee came together to help make this event such a huge success.
2017 World Masters All-Round Speed Skating Games were held at the Pomeroy Sport Centre between March 10 and 12, 2017.
This event was hosted by the Fort St. John Elks Speed Skating Club along with support from the City of Fort St. John. This event saw approximately 100 masters' level speed skaters from eight countries including Canada, the United States, Australia, Romania, Germany, Italy, Japan, and the Netherlands.
“Hosting the World Masters Games will not only be the largest, it will also be the first ever international skating event we have organized. We have always enjoyed tremendous support from the City of Fort St. John, individuals and businesses in the community as well as the provincial and national speed skating organizations,” commented Dee-Ann Stickel, chair of the 2017 Games Organizing Committee. ”We are looking forward to this opportunity to showcase the Community, the Pomeroy Sport Centre, the Club and the sport of speed skating.”

Fort St. John hosted the BC Winter Games, February 20-23, 2020, for the first time in 35 years, which saw up to 1,800 volunteers responsible for planning and staging the Games. The games were attended by 1,500 athletes, coaches and officials with an economic impact at $1.8-million.
The BC Winter Games are British Columbia’s biennial celebration of sport and community bringing together British Columbia’s best emerging high-performance athletes, trained coaches, and certified officials for four days of competition. This experience is an important development opportunity and stepping stone towards higher level sport competitions. Sports will include everything from archery and badminton to speed skating to cross country skiing and alpine skiing.
Economic Impact Assessment
The combined spending of out-of-town participants, delegates, spectators, and other people who visited Fort St. John for the BC Winter games, in combination with expenditures made by the event organizers totalling almost $1.4 million, produced nearly $1.8 million in economic activity in the Fort St. John area and over $2.1 million in overall economic activity in British Columbia.
