The City of Fort St. John proudly employs members of the BC General Employees' Union (BCGEU) and the International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF) to foster positive labour relations and fair workplace practices. In addition to our unionized staff, we also employ exempt management and professional employees who play a key role in leading and supporting city operations. Together, all employees contribute to delivering high-quality services to our community in a respectful and collaborative work environment.

Robust Learning and Development Program
We have a calendar filled with a variety of training opportunities to meet the needs of all employees through multiple approaches:
- In-house training provides employees with training on topics such as Health and Safety, Customer Service, Emotional Health, Stress in the Workplace, and First Aid.
- In partnership with Emergency Management BC, employees can access Emergency Management training.
- In our Manager Training program, employees seeking to develop management skills can access programs offered by the Municipal Administration Training Institute (MATI) and the Local Government Management Association.
Since 2018, the City has partnered with the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology's (SAIT) Corporate Training Solutions to offer credited courses through SAIT, which will allow participants to complete the Supervisor Skills Certificate jointly offered by the City of Fort St. John and SAIT. This program will enable applicants to complete further certification through SAIT. This is a valuable training opportunity for staff in supervisory and management positions or those desiring a future in leadership roles.
