The Community Awards allow us to publicly recognize and honour the individuals, groups, and businesses whose talents, dedication and generosity have contributed greatly to life in Fort St. John.

The 2024 Community Awards Committee comprised of Councillor Gord Klassen, Councillor Tony Zabinsky, Eryn Griffith, Arts & Culture Manager; and, Naomi Gallant, Community Development Coordinator.

The 18th Annual Community Awards were held at noon on September 6, 2025 on the main stage in Centennial Park. Nomination period for the 2025 Awards will take place May 20 - July 14.

Award Categories

Youth Award

Individual or Group

The Youth Award recognizes an individual or youth group who has made a positive contribution to the community on a volunteer basis such as developing a project, serving
on a committee or other volunteer work with organizations and groups.

Eligibility: Nominees must have made their outstanding contribution within the past 12 months, be 18 years or under and must not have won this award in the past three years.

Non-Profit Award

Individual, Group, or Corporate

The Non-Profit Award recognizes a group of individuals or an organization whose actions, commitment, volunteer leadership, service and community spirt has made a positive impact on the community.

Eligibility: Nominees must have made their outstanding contribution within the past 12 months, and must not have won this award in the past three years.

Business Award

Individual, Group, or Corporate

The Business Award recognizes the contributions of an individual or business towards areas including, but not limited to; social innovation, mentorship, or investing in the community.

Eligibility: Nominees must have made their outstanding contribution within the past 12 months, and must not have won this award in the past three years.

Citizen of the Year 

Individual or Group

The Citizen of the Year Award recognizes an individual or group of individuals that has achieved an exemplary reputation inside and outside our community with their actions. They are known as a leader or role model by their peers and contribute to the community in a meaningful way.

Eligibility: Nominees must have made their outstanding contribution within the past 12 months, and must not have won this award in the past three years.

Nomination Criteria

Activities must have been performed in the last year.

Be thorough, as your description will provide the only information from which the judges will base their decisions.

Nomination Criteria - Each section is worth 10 points
Impact – Describe the importance of the nominee’s contribution in their field or community.
Reach – Describe who benefited from the nominee’s contribution.
Inspiration – Describe how the nominee became a role model in the community and has inspired others.

Additional Notes:

  • Nominees will be contacted to confirm acceptance of the nomination.
  • Nominees will be put through a screening process.
  • Separate nominations may be submitted for as many individuals, businesses or groups as desired.
  • Nominators may be contacted for additional information.
  • Nominator’s identity will remain anonymous.

Ineligible Nominees:

  1. Municipal, Provincial, or Federal politicians presently holding office.
  2. Individuals who are on the Community Awards Planning Committee.
  3. Individuals, organizations or businesses that have won an award in the same category in the past three years.
  4. Nominations that do not have adequate information describing why the nominee should be considered for an award.
  5. Nominees who nominate themselves.
