Depending on the severity of the situation, an Evacuation Alert or Order may be issued. It's important to understand the difference and to always follow the advice and direction of your local authorities.

• Evacuation Alert: Be ready to leave on short notice
• Evacuation Order: You are at risk. Leave the area immediately
  • Tactical evacuation: This happens when a sudden threat to life requires immediate action and there is no time to prepare or issue written warnings. These types of evacuations are often coordinated by the RCMP or local police, with assistance from other agencies.
• Evacuation Rescinded: The risk to life and safety has now passed

Emergency Support Services (ESS) is a provincial program delivered by local governments and First Nations that provides short-term assistance to people who are forced to leave their homes due to emergencies.

ESS is designed to help British Columbians meet their basic needs
while evacuated from their home.

The core categories of support include:

• Food
• Clothing
• Incidentals (such as diapers or toiletries)
• Temporary Accommodations

ESS is intended for individuals who cannot fully support themselves during an emergency. If you are able to manage independently, you may not be eligible. Home owner or tenant insurance may provide additional support; it is recommended you check your policy before accessing ESS.

Once you are safe, contact your insurance company or the Insurance Bureau of Canada at 1-844-277-5422. Your insurance representative will be able to assist you through the process.
