Statement of Condolence from Mayor Hansen

Fort St. John Mayor Lilia Hansen has issued the following statement:

On behalf of Fort St. John City Council, I extend my heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and loved ones of Gurkirat Singh Manocha during this deeply difficult time.

The sudden loss of a young life is felt far beyond those closest to them. It touches classmates, educators, coworkers, and neighbours across our community. To everyone in Fort St. John who is grieving, please know that you are not alone and that we stand with you.

I also want to extend my sincere sympathies to the Sikh community, here in Fort St. John and beyond. We recognize and respect the Sikh values of remembrance, sangat—coming together in community—and seva, the spirit of selfless service. These traditions offer strength, care, and connection in moments of loss, and we stand in solidarity with you as you honour Gurkirat’s life.

Students, faculty, and staff at Northern Lights College who may need support are encouraged to access the following resources:

  • A quiet space will be available in the Atrium at the Fort St. John campus throughout the week for those who wish to gather, reflect, mourn, or pray.
  • Students are encouraged to use the GuardMe Student Support Program
  • Faculty supports are available through their Employee and Family Assistance Program

In times like these, it is important that we take care of one another and ourselves. Grief can affect each of us differently, and reaching out for support is a sign of strength.
