Freedom of Information
British Columbia's Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FOIPPA) provides a legislated right of access to all records held and controlled by the City of Fort St. John, or any other public body, and regulates how the City manages personal and confidential information. The Act allows you to request and obtain copies of records, and provides the right of protection of the privacy of your personal information.
How to request information from the City of Fort St. John:
Start by making an informal request. To do this, contact the department you think might have the information you are looking for. If the records you are requesting are already routinely available then they will be released to you without you having to submit a formal request.
If you are requesting Building Department records, take a look at our Building Files Routine Release Procedure [PDF - 342 KB] and Information Sheet [PDF - 68 KB] which identifies and outlines classes of documents that can be routinely released.
If you are requesting Fire Department records, visit the Fire Department Information Requests page.
If you would like access to information held by the City that is not readily available on the City’s website or through routine channels, you may submit a formal request by completing the Request for Access to Records form [PDF - 333 KB]. Your request should clearly describe the records you are requesting; keep it concise and focused in order to reduce processing time.
The Act provides that we must respond to your request within 30 business days of receipt of your request, except in special circumstances where limited extensions may be made. We will make every effort to make the records available to you sooner, if possible.
If you have questions or need clarification about the City’s records before you submit your request, contact the Legislative Services department.
You may deliver, mail, fax or email your request to:
