First phase of 89 Avenue construction project begins

July 28, 2023

Starting Tuesday, August 1, 89 Avenue between 78a Street and 81a Street will be closed as contracted crews begin construction on the first phase of the 89 Avenue project. This project will see underground utilities replaced, road reconstruction, sidewalks and streetlighting installed along 89 Avenue between 78a Street and 86 Street over several phases.

Earlier this year, Council awarded this project phase to DGS Astro Paving of Fort St. John with a budget of $2.245 million. The project is funded through non-property tax revenues, such as the Peace River Agreement and water and sewer reserves.

The Peace River Agreement provides a significant source of revenue for eight local governments in Northeast BC, recognizing the industrial activities occurring outside municipal boundaries. Since 1994, Fort St. John has invested over $375 million in PRA funding to increase the vibrancy and livability of the city. This funding allows the City to fund necessary improvements to infrastructure and to provide services to industries, employees and residents in our community.

Detour routes will be in place using 93 Avenue and 78a Street. As always, please obey all traffic control personnel and signage, and slow down near crews working to ensure everyone's safety.
