City and VRS Communities working together on seniors housing complex

November 16, 2023

Following an announcement earlier this year that the previous VRS Communities project near the Fort St. John Hospital and Peace Villa was no longer proceeding, the City of Fort St. John and VRS Communities are working together to bring a 115-unit seniors housing complex to the downtown core.

Proposed on a portion of the old Fort St. John Hospital site, The Harlequin at City Centre project will feature 1-bedroom, 2-bedroom, and studio homes. Universally designed for accessibility, it will also include meals, living services, and lifestyle programs that support independent living for seniors. Several steps must be completed over the next few months as the City and VRS Communities work towards potential construction starting in 2024, including finalization of the purchase agreement, lot subdivision, and various development and building permits.

“This proposed project is an important step forward in addressing the need for affordable seniors housing in our community. We look forward to working with VRS Communities to provide much-needed housing options for seniors, and to seeing the positive impact it will have on our community,” shares Fort St. John Mayor Lilia Hansen.

“As a non-profit and charitable organization with 1600 units of housing serving persons with disabilities and seniors across BC, VRS Communities is dedicated to improving accessibility and promoting independent community living. With great anticipation, we expect to break ground in 2024 to create new homes for seniors and make a meaningful contribution to the well-being of this vibrant city," stated Ken Fraser, Executive Director of VRS Communities.

Additional information will be shared as the project advances.
