Walking Trails

Whether you are looking for a quick loop around the block, take in a bit of the forest or find the fastest route, there is an extensive trails system that has been set up throughout the City. The City has been working hard to link neighbourhoods and develop a comprehensive hiking and biking trails network; view a map of existing trails [PDF - 5 MB].

Trail Guidelines

  • No motorized vehicles are permitted on the trails
  • Keep to the right when approaching oncoming trail users or being passed
  • Use trash receptacles provided
  • Be courteous towards other trail users
  • Use the trail in a safe manner and be aware of possible wildlife encounters

Dog Etiquette

  • Dogs must be on a leash.
  • Clean up after your dog baggies and trash receptacles are provided. Failure to leash or pick up after your dog is a $100 fine.

Wildlife Encounters

  • Wildlife encounters are common in this area and moose are known to frequent the trails. Please remember these tips while using the trails:

    • Avoid surprising wildlife by making noise or travelling in a group
    • Stay away from an animal’s feeding site
    • Any changes in wildlife behaviour may mean that you are too close
    • If you do encounter a bear - do not turn your back and run - speak calmly yet firmly while trying to appear larger and back away slowly. If the animal is aggressive, throw things at it. If attacked, FIGHT BACK!

Fish Creek is a natural area that is not maintained regularly. All users entering this area do so at their own risk and be aware that hazards may exist. Hazards may include uneven, wet or slippery trails, obstacles such as stumps, rocks, roots and holes, wildlife, streams and creeks, trees and vegetation (including poisonous or toxic plants). There are no water stations on the trails, so please carry enough water for your group. Report hazards to the City of Fort St. John by calling 3-1-1 or using the Report a Problem Form.

Agents of Discovery

In 2017, the City launched an augmented reality mobile game called Agents of Discovery to play and discover the world around you. Unlock hidden geo-located challenges that can only be solved through exploration and discovery.

Be sure to check out the Fish Creek Community Forest challenges as they are always changing!

The app uses no cellular data after the mission has been downloaded and is a great way for kids and adults alike to merge technology and recreation! For more information, visit agentsofdiscovery.com.
