Winner chosen in Community Awards Art Competition

January 12, 2022

Last fall, the City of Fort St. John, with support from the Fort St. John Arts Council, hosted a public art competition offering local artists the opportunity to design the award given to our outstanding citizens, organizations and businesses at the annual Community Awards.

Several submissions were received, with the design from Ovvian Castrillo Hill being selected as the winner. Working with Ovvian, the design will be produced before the 15th Annual Community Awards on May 26, 2022.

The design has four stacked pebble blocks which symbolize elements of our community - land, people, the self, and industry. One block, the self, is finished differently, reflecting how an individual is an integral part of building community. A stainless-steel plaque points upwards to indicate progress, while the hole in the plaque represents how that progress is never complete and that the community must continue to grow together.

“Council would like to thank all of the artists who submitted designs for the competition. Our community has incredible artists who provide so much to our community. We cannot wait to showcase the award designed by Ovvian at the upcoming Community Awards,” said Mayor Lori Ackerman.

The Community Awards allow us to publicly recognize and honour the individuals, groups, and businesses whose talents, dedication and generosity have contributed significantly to life in Fort St. John. For more information about the Community Awards, visit www.fortstjohn.ca/community-awards.
