Neighbourhood Small Grant Applications Open

August 30, 2022

If you had $500 to spend on creating community within your own neighbourhood, what ideas would you have? That’s the question the City of Fort St. John, in partnership with the North Peace Community Foundation, is asking residents of the city. Together, we are pleased to announce a new grassroots micro-grant pilot program called “Neighbourhood Small Grants”.

Neighbourhood Small Grants is an initiative started by the Vancouver Foundation that has spread throughout British Columbia and up north to Fort St. John. The program provides up to $500 to groups of neighbours for local projects that focus on building community and making their neighbourhoods better places to live. The program is based on a simple but powerful idea—that everyone is a valuable community member and that we all have something to share. In Fort St. John, funding for these grants is provided by the City of Fort St. John.

These grants are meant for groups of people who live in the same neighbourhood where the projects are meant to take place. The Project Managers who apply are encouraged to have even more people involved in organizing their project. Neighbourhood Small Grants are about building connections, after all!

Lots of different ideas are expected to be funded, with a focus on those that build connections. In other communities, Neighbourhood Small Grants have funded block parties; emergency preparedness workshops; art making projects and art shows; community garden projects; book exchange boxes; music, harvest and lantern festivals; cultural celebrations; sports days; and much more!
