City honours Richard Neufeld with Freedom of the City Award

November 25, 2021

Today, at a ceremony held inside City Hall, Fort St. John City Council bestowed The Honourable Richard Neufeld with the Freedom of the City Award, recognizing his many contributions to our community.

After moving to the region as a teenager, Senator Neufeld spent almost 40 years serving the area in all three levels of government. Following his local government service in Fort Nelson, he was elected as a Member of the Legislative Assembly for Peace River North in 1991; a position he would hold for 18 years, including eight as the Minister of Energy, Mines and Petroleum Resources. He then served as a Senator for British Columbia from January 2009 until his retirement in 2019.

“Senator Neufeld represented our community and region for almost four decades, making countless contributions to our community, province and country. The City of Fort St. John is proud to present him with this award and add him to the list of those who always go above and beyond for our community,” stated Mayor Lori Ackerman.

The Freedom of the City is the highest honour given by the City of Fort St. John and is used in exceptional cases to recognize the significant contributions the recipient has made to our community. Council, by unanimous vote, can award the Freedom of the City to a distinguished person or unit of the armed forces.
