City celebrates winter

December 18, 2020

The City, along with local stakeholders, developed a Winter City Micro-Project Strategy in 2017 to improve four areas of winter livability: physical, social, economic and policy. Since the strategy’s development, several micro-projects have been implemented throughout the city; however, this year, the City of Fort St. John launched several new or expanded initiatives, including:

- Light up your Business Grant: Supported through the Mayor’s Standing Committee on Economic Recovery and Resiliency, over 40 local businesses applied for funding up to $1,000 to illuminate their businesses to encourage local shopping and add brightness during the long periods of darkness experienced during winter.

- Snow Angels Program: Colourful shovels were provided to businesses who participated in the Light up your Business Grant program to encourage people to lend a hand. Additional shovels will be placed in City parks and given to residents who are seen helping their neighbours.

- Additional holiday and winter decorations: From the Christmas Tree display in front of the Pomeroy Sport Centre to the additional lighted decorations in Centennial Park and the I heart Fort St. John sign near the formal gardens, these decorations help celebrate the winter season. Decorations were also installed on walking trails and at the Off-leash Dog Park, and colourful Adirondack chairs have been placed throughout several City parks.

- Temporary public art installation: The City installed temporary public art utilizing additional coloured shovels and Live It Snow signage on the old hospital site’s fence. The colour brightens the space and further celebrates the season.

- Winter sand program: Residential use sand is available free of charge at the Public Works Building (10303 Cree Road) and in the parking lot across from the Lido Theatre (corner of 100 Street and 102 Avenue).

“As one of only five Canadian cities north of the 56th parallel, we know winter and the opportunities it brings with it. Together, we can celebrate and embrace being a Winter City,” said Mayor Lori Ackerman.
