Roads

The City of Fort St. John maintains 166 kilometres of roads inside the city’s boundaries. This is continually expanding every year.

The Alaska Highway (Highway 97) and roads outside of the city’s boundaries are maintained by the Ministry of Transportation.

If you see a hazard on our roads, please use the Report a Problem tool on our website or the City of Fort St. John App to inform us of it.

Street Sweeping

Residential sweeping begins after the snow piles have melted and residents have had time to clear the gravel from the boulevard. The first round of street sweeping starts in the downtown core and on the main roads in preparation for line painting.

Grading, Dust Control, Drainage, Pothole Patching, Asphalt Overlay

The application of dust control on gravel roads is done throughout the summer season as required. Ditches and storm drains are cleared of winter sand and garbage on an ongoing basis. Potholes and small asphalt repairs are done using different types of asphalt recycling. The City hires contractors to rebuild or overlay the asphalt on various streets each year.

Road Marking

The City hires a contractor to paint road lines and road markings including crosswalks. Paint can only be applied when the road surface temperatures are approximately 10 degrees Celsius. This work is scheduled to be done once the frost is permanently out of the ground, which in our area, is typically after the May long weekend, but it is weather dependent.
