Spirit Week has been organized for the past 4 years in Fort St John by the City of Fort St John Spirit of BC Committee during the same time in February set for the 2010 Olympics. The Committee’s purpose was to inspire people of all ages to celebrate and enhance areas related to sport and recreation, healthy living, arts and culture, literacy and volunteerism. Members also aided in the delivery of community based events and activities that celebrate British Columbia and its unique communities.
This year, since the Vancouver 2010 Olympics will be underway between February 12-28, 2008, each community in BC is hosting Spirit Week at a time that best suits their individual community. Therefore, The Olympic Torch Relay Committee has combined efforts with the Spirit Week Committee to provide nine days of activities aimed at promoting excitement and enthusiasm for the upcoming Vancouver 2010 Olympics and the arrival of the Olympic Torch in Fort St John.
The Spirit Week activities will kick off on Friday, November 20th with the annual Fort St. John Santa Parade. Special appearances in the parade will be made by the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Mascots, Miga, Sumi and Quatchi. School visits by these Olympic icons are also currently being planned.
The nine days of events will continue from the parade and end on Sunday November 29th. Some of the many family focused events include a free movie night at the Lido Theatre, free swim at the North Peace Leisure Pool, free skate at the Enerplex, a Cultural Day, and special events to be held at the Fort St John Public Library. In keeping with our designation of the Music Capital of Northern BC, there will be musical events planned each night throughout the week featuring a wide range of genres.
