The Department of Infrastructure and Capital Works is responsible for many of the new capital works projects for the City of fort St. John. This includes helping to establish the current budget and five year plan for the City, as well as coordinating and executing construction tenders based on the five year plan.

The main areas are in road reconstruction and paving, and all related works on existing streets. This includes storm sewer upgrades, curb and gutter, sidewalks, streetlighting, new traffic signals and pedestrian controlled crosswalks, and paving.

The expansion of the trail network is also part of this department. Other areas include new installations of park equipment and other amenities such as tennis courts. The expansion of water and sewer facilities, pipelines and associated works is also included in the work of this department.

The Director of Infrastructure and Capital Works also is a liaison person for a number of different technical committees such as the Peace River Regional District Solid Waste Technical Advisory Committee, BC Hydro Technical Advisory Committee, Northeast Invasive Plant Committee, PRRD Committee for Greenhouse Gas Reduction, numerous traffic safety committees as well as the Public Works Association of British Columbia.

The Director works closely with the Public Works Department and the Planning and Engineering Department to ensure that all of the works are coordinated and meet the appropriate needs and requirements of the community and governing agencies.

The Director also coordinates with BC Transit and the Finance Department for any HandyDART expansion and regular transit route restructuring and works closely with the Public Works Department and the contractor for Solid Waste Collection. The existing contractor is Waste Management.
