Hiring Process

With a diversified work force of over 200 employees, the City employs people in a variety of locations throughout Fort St. John. In addition to City Hall, work locations include: Public Works Yard, Water Treatment Plant, Fort St. John RCMP detachment, Fire Hall, Pomeroy Sport Centre, North Peace Arena, North Peace Leisure Pool, and the Visitor Information Centre.

The City of Fort St. John seeks to recruit, select and retain the best qualified employees in order to provide effective and efficient services to the public in its present and future operations.

The Human Resources Division will ensure the integrity and consistency of the recruitment and selection process by endorsing fair and equal treatment of all candidates. Information pertaining to a candidate’s application shall be kept confidential at all times during the recruitment and selection process.

Due to the volume of resumes that we receive, we do not accept unsolicited resumes.

How to apply for a City of Fort St. John Job Posting?

Option 1 – Mail, fax, email, or personally deliver your cover letter and resume using the contact information below.

The Posting Number must be clearly indicated, and cover letter and resume must be received prior to 4:00 pm on the closing date.

Option 2 – Clicking on a job posting on the Job Opportunities page and following the steps under “Apply for this Job”. We appreciate your interest in working for the City, however un-solicited resumes are not accepted and only short-listed candidates are contacted. Please check back to the website regularly and submit your resume for job postings as they become available.

What's Involved?

The following process is observed for all job postings:

Accepting Resumes

Upon request from the hiring department, the HR Department prepares internal and external job postings. The HR Department receives all applications and records the date and time applications are received. Applications must clearly indicate a job posting ID, and must be received by the HR Department prior to 4:00 pm on the job closing date.  Applications received after the closing date and time will not be accepted. Candidates are responsible for ensuring that their application is complete and discloses all applicable qualifications and experience.

Selection In Progress

After a job posting is closed, the HR Department forwards all applications to the hiring department for short-listing.  Candidates are assessed based on the following criteria:

  1. Candidate status - internal or external applicant
  2. Seniority of Candidate (if internal)
  3. Candidates qualifications, experience, skills and abilities in comparison with the position requirements and with the overall needs of both the hiring department and the Municipality

Testing

Tests which determine abilities fundamental to the performance of the job may be part of the selection process.  All employment tests administered will be validated and related to the specific job duties and functions.  Tests shall be administered fairly and consistently within each work area and will comply with the Human Rights Code and other statutory provisions.

Interviews

Interviews are conducted by an interview panel which typically consists of a minimum of two people from the hiring department.  Interviews for each position are conducted in a consistent format to ensure each candidate is given fair treatment, and to assist with the decision making process. 

Reference Checking

The HR Department contacts references for all candidates being interviewed for the position.  Checks are performed via telephone, using a standard reference checking form.  A minimum of two reference checks will be made for each candidate, and references provided must be candidate’s direct supervisor from previous/current employment.

Police Information Checks/Security Clearances

A police information check or security clearance may be required for some positions and is completed in accordance with the City’s Criminal Records Check Procedure Policy.

Position Filled

The hiring department director/manager selects and notifies the successful applicant(s) and confirms acceptance of the position award. The HR Department prepares written confirmation of the award and prepares letters to all unsuccessful applicants who were interviewed.
