Business Licence

The City of Fort St. John recognizes that strong, successful businesses are the foundation for a healthy community. Everyone benefits from the employment, improved shopping and services, and broader tax base created by a vibrant local economy. The City is dedicated to creating a business-friendly environment that encourages local businesses to grow and prosper and that attracts new investors and businesses to the community.

Business Licence:

A $25 deposit is due with application of a licence and is applied to the licence cost.

Business Licence fees are $125 annually.

A relocation a fee of $125 for inspection, approval and a new licence is required when a business moves.

Application:

Business licence application forms are at the bottom of this page, at City Hall and at OneStop 

Once the application is received City staff will arrange a date and time for the building and Fire Department inspections. If necessary, the application will be forwarded to the Northern Health Authority.  The Northern Health Authority will contact applicants directly to ensure their inspections are conducted in a timely manner and return the signed application to City staff once it is approved.

Each business location must be licensed separately.

If a company is registered as a Limited or Incorporated Company, the registration number provided by the province is required.

Timeline:

An application for a business licence takes approximately 7 to 10 business days. Fire Department and Health inspections can take longer.

Make changes:

A business that is transferring their location is required to complete a new application or Schedule B or Schedule C under the City of Fort St. John Business Licence Bylaw and submit a $125 fee.

A business may transfer a licence as a change of ownership, provided written notice is submitted by the current owner. Change of a company’s name or mailing address is processed without any charge.

To close a business account a written letter stating the date of closure and the owners’ signatures is required.

Inter-Comunity business licence:

In addition to the standard Fort St. John licence, businesses now have the option of purchasing an Inter-Community Business Licence for $130.00. This licence will permit the business to operate in the following communities:

  • City of Dawson Creek
  • District of Chetwynd
  • District of Hudson's Hope
  • District of Taylor
  • District of Tumbler Ridge
  • Northern Rockies Regional Municipality
  • Village of Pouce Coupe
